Stroke Warning Signs: Why Every Minute Matters

A stroke can happen suddenly and can affect a person's ability to speak, move, see, or understand. It occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted or when a blood vessel in the brain bleeds.

Because brain cells can become damaged when they are deprived of oxygen and nutrients, time is critical during a stroke. Recognizing the warning signs and getting emergency medical attention as quickly as possible can significantly influence the outcome.

What Is a Stroke?

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is disrupted.

There are two main types:

Ischemic Stroke

An ischemic stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery supplying blood to the brain. It is the most common type of stroke.

How to Recognize a Stroke: Remember FAST

F – Face

Does one side of the face droop or feel numb?

A – Arms

Ask the person to raise both arms.

Is one arm weak, numb, or drifting downward?

S – Speech

Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence.

Is their speech slurred, confused, unusual, or difficult to understand?

T – Time

Time is critical. If any of these signs appear suddenly, seek emergency medical help immediately.

Do not wait to see whether the symptoms improve.

Other Warning Signs of Stroke

Stroke symptoms can vary depending on the part of the brain affected. Other sudden symptoms may include:

• Numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body
• Difficulty speaking or understanding speech
• Sudden confusion
• Sudden difficulty seeing in one or both eyes
• Sudden trouble walking
• Loss of balance or coordination
• Severe dizziness
• A sudden, severe headache without an obvious cause
• Difficulty swallowing

A person does not need to have every symptom to be experiencing a stroke.

Sudden onset is particularly important. Any new neurological symptom that appears abruptly should be treated seriously.

Why Does Every Minute Matter?

The brain depends on a continuous supply of oxygen and nutrients. When blood flow is interrupted, brain tissue can become damaged.

For certain types of ischemic stroke, some treatments may be time-dependent and are most effective when appropriate patients are treated as early as possible after symptoms begin.

This is why reaching a hospital quickly matters.

The earlier a patient is assessed, the sooner doctors can determine:

• Whether the symptoms are caused by a stroke
• Which type of stroke may be involved
• When the symptoms started or when the patient was last known to be well
• Whether emergency treatment may be appropriate
• What further care and monitoring are required

What Should You Do If You Suspect a Stroke?

If you notice possible stroke symptoms:

1. Seek emergency medical help immediately.

Do not wait for the symptoms to disappear.

2. Note the time the symptoms started.

If the exact time is unknown, remember when the person was last known to be well.

3. Keep the person safe and comfortable.

Stay with them and monitor their condition while waiting for medical assistance.

4. Do not give food, drinks, or medicines unless instructed by a medical professional.

Swallowing may be affected during a stroke, creating a risk of choking or aspiration.

5. Do not allow the person to drive themselves.

Emergency medical transport can allow appropriate care to begin while the patient is being taken to the hospital.

What Happens at the Hospital?

When a patient with suspected stroke arrives at the hospital, the medical team typically performs an urgent assessment.

This may include:

• Evaluation of neurological symptoms
• Assessment of vital signs and medical history
• Blood tests when required
• Brain imaging such as CT or MRI, depending on the clinical situation
• Blood-vessel imaging when indicated
• Assessment of the type, location, and extent of the stroke

The purpose of rapid assessment is to determine the cause of symptoms and identify the most appropriate treatment as quickly as possible.

Can a Stroke Be Treated?

Treatment depends on the type of stroke, the timing of symptoms, the patient's medical condition, and findings from clinical assessment and brain imaging.

For eligible patients with certain ischemic strokes, doctors may consider treatments designed to restore blood flow. In selected cases, an endovascular procedure may also be considered to remove a blood clot from a blocked blood vessel.

Hemorrhagic strokes require a different treatment approach, which may include controlling blood pressure, managing bleeding and pressure within the brain, and specialist intervention when appropriate.

Stroke treatment is highly time-sensitive and must be determined by an emergency and neurological medical team.

What About a TIA or "Mini-Stroke"?

A transient ischemic attack (TIA) can cause stroke-like symptoms that resolve after a short period.

Even if the symptoms disappear, a TIA should not be ignored.

A TIA can be an important warning that a person may be at increased risk of a future stroke. Urgent medical assessment can help identify possible causes and reduce future risk.

Symptoms that disappear still require medical attention.

Who Is at Higher Risk of Stroke?

Several factors can increase the risk of stroke, including:

• High blood pressure
• Diabetes
• High cholesterol
• Smoking or tobacco use
• Heart disease
• Atrial fibrillation and certain other heart rhythm disorders
• Obesity
• Physical inactivity
• Excessive alcohol consumption
• Previous stroke or TIA
• Family history of stroke
• Increasing age

Some risk factors cannot be changed, but many can be identified and managed with appropriate medical care.

How Can Stroke Risk Be Reduced?

Stroke prevention begins with understanding and managing individual risk factors.

Important preventive measures include:

• Monitoring and controlling blood pressure
• Managing diabetes and cholesterol
• Following a heart-healthy eating pattern
• Maintaining regular physical activity
• Avoiding tobacco
• Limiting alcohol consumption
• Maintaining a healthy weight
• Managing conditions such as atrial fibrillation
• Taking prescribed medicines as directed
• Attending regular health checkups when recommended

Never Wait for Stroke Symptoms to Improve
