Job Summary

A neurosurgeon diagnoses and surgically treats disorders of the brain, spine, and nervous system, managing conditions from tumors and trauma to degenerative spine issues, involving complex operations, consultations, patient evaluation, and post-operative care, often working long hours with high-stakes, life-saving procedures and collaborating with other specialists. Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Diagnosis: Assessing patients, ordering imaging (MRIs, CTs), and diagnosing conditions affecting the central and peripheral nervous system.
  • Treatment Planning: Determining if surgery or non-surgical methods (injections, rehab) are best, even recommending against surgery if non-operative care suffices.
  • Surgical Procedures: Performing complex operations on the brain, spine, and nerves, potentially using advanced tools like robotics.
  • Patient Care: Managing pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care, including rehabilitation and addressing potential complications like strokes or blood clots.
  • Consultation & Collaboration: Working with neurologists, radiologists, and other doctors, often called in for emergencies like strokes or aneurysms.
  • Education: Explaining conditions and treatment plans to patients and families, which can be emotionally demanding.
  • Documentation: Maintaining detailed patient records, medical history, and managing paperwork.
